John Sterbenz (Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET))
09:27
I'm John Sterbenz, Executive Director of the Detroit Area Library Network (DALNET). While I've been in library administration for over 20 years, I'm new to any Director role, having started at DALNET last August. This session captured my interest by name and I thought I would attend to learn more.
Rebecca Wilden, Mechanicsburg PL OH
10:48
Hi, my name is Rebecca Wilden and I am the director of Mechanicsburg Public Library, a small/rural library in west central Ohio. I started in August 2020; before that I was assistant director at Bucyrus Public Library in north central Ohio for 3 years. I have a MS in Information from the University of Michigan.
Liz Fitzgerald
11:03
I'm Liz Fitzgerald, Executive Director of the Abington Township Public Library in PA. I just started this Monday as well, Erik. Previously I was an administrator at the Free Library of Philadelphia. I'm here because a FLP colleague shared info about this meeting with me.
Laura Sill - University of Notre Dame
11:18
Hello, everyone, I am not a new director, but I am curious about this role and I thought this IG would provide me new insights. I am a program director for metadata services at the Hesburgh Libraries of Notre Dame. I have worked in systems, acquisitions and I have managed technical services. In our library, we have recently reorganized and our current director, Diane Walker, is retiring this summer. I hope I am free to join and learn from all of you!
Dyan Barbeau, Cardinal Stritch
12:15
I'm Dyan Barbeau, the interim director of Cardinal Stritch University library in Milwaukee, WI. I have been in this position for four months and want to learn all I can. So I thought this group would be helpful.
Susan Dahl (University of Calgary, Canada)
13:37
Hello, I'm Susan Dahl, Director of Content Services (Cataloguing) at the University of Calgary. I've worked in specialist positions and this is my first time in a leadership/manager role.
Julie Wendorf
14:35
Hi, I'm Julie Wendorf, the Director at the Crown Point Community Library in Northwest Indiana right outside Chicago. I have worked at the library since 2010, but became Director in 2018. I'm always looking for other opportunities to connect with other library leaders and additional leadership training.

Ashley Creek
37:31
I came in late, but I'm Ashley Creek, Director of the Keleher Learning Commons at the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, KS. I was promoted from within and have now been at this institution for a decade. I became the Director in January 2018 and spent my first year in renovations and this second year in Covid.

One positive to come out of COVID is that so many governmental meetings are virtual. It will provide a way to learn your other local organizations in a low key way.
Julie Wendorf
42:35
I have been director about the same amount of time, Ashley. I think I'm coming to the realization that they is going to always be a "fire" even if it isn't a pandemic.
Susan Dahl (University of Calgary, Canada)
43:33
I agree about the putting out fires--it makes it more difficult to do the more strategic work and planning
Julie Wendorf
45:12
I have found that you need to be proactive to save time for planning and strategic work because the "fires" will always emerge.
Rebecca Wilden, Mechanicsburg PL OH

Great suggestion, Erik - there is a local chapter of Toastmasters meeting virtually tomorrow for free!
Dyan Barbeau, Cardinal Stritch
50:11
I would be interested in hearing how others promote the value of the library.
