Hear hear!
Gwendolyn Prellwitz
01:36:10
For those alumni who have served on the jury can you also talk briefly about what the reference is asked? It's not a *letter* of recommendation but a form they are asked to complete.
Denisse Solis
01:36:58
Which makes it easier (I think)
Gwendolyn Prellwitz
01:37:51
Agreed, lot less time for the reference than writing a letter but its great to let references know what to expect when asking them to serve as a recommender.
Holly Smith
01:38:26
And even though it's a form make sure you ask people to be a recommender in enough time!
Twanna Hodge
01:39:37
Identify 3-6 people who can be recommenders.
Patricia Valdovinos
01:39:42
One tip I have is to create a PDF file with everything included, deadlines, your own contact info (phone number, email), info on spectrum, resume or CV, and essay. I would email it to them and also give them a hard copy.
Gwendolyn Prellwitz
01:39:54
If you do need to switch out references, you can! You can contact scholarships@ala.org and copy spectrum@ala.org if you need to make changes!
Twanna Hodge
01:40:02
Agreed!
Patricia Valdovinos
01:40:22
I think Twana hit most of those points!
Patricia Valdovinos
01:40:24
*Twanna
Holly Smith
01:41:04
Hi Doris I think it depends on how many credit hours you've completed - Wendy is that true?
Holly Smith
01:41:21
Regarding applying for Spectrum nearing graduation
Gwendolyn Prellwitz
01:41:27
Hi Doris, if someone has coursework to complete in Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 yes! Our current application cycle is for funding for the Fall Semester/Quarter
Holly Smith
01:41:34
my pleasure!
Holly Smith
01:41:43
thank you Gwen!
Denisse Solis
01:41:46
I know people who received it their last year of the MLIS. (I applied and didn't get it the first time.)
Gwendolyn Prellwitz
01:42:01
essentially would need to still have 4 classes to take across Fall and Spring of next year
Kimberly Williams
01:42:36
Does the committee start reviewing the applications before the March deadline, or do they wait until the cutoff date?
Gwendolyn Prellwitz
01:43:12
Our application is through the larger ALA Scholarship Program so our jury won't actually have access until after the deadline
Twanna Hodge
01:43:19
The jury usually begins reviewing the applications well after the deadline.
Brittany Fiedler
01:43:24
I was applying for Spectrum at the same time I was applying for MLIS programs, so for most of my references I was asking for both a scholarship recommendation and admittance recommendation, and that is also totally okay.
Heather VanDyne
01:43:27
I received my scholarship while finishing my first year and am receiving my funds for my second
Kimberly Williams
01:43:29
thank you
Brittany Fiedler
01:43:46
I was applying for Spectrum at the same time I was applying for MLIS programs, so for most of my references I was asking for both a scholarship recommendation and admittance recommendation, and that is also totally okay.
Gwendolyn Prellwitz
01:43:55
there's a short period of time where the Clearinghouse is still processing transcripts, so typically the jury starts reviewing a few weeks after the deadline
Zoë McLaughlin
01:44:09
I want to add that I did not have any librarians as recommenders. I just made sure to be clear with them what my story/angle was in terms of why I was applying and what I wanted to contribute tot he field
Brittany Fiedler
01:44:20
I didn’t even realize until this moment that other people would have librarians as recommenders!
April Hummons
01:44:45
A little advice is to have your transcripts sent as soon as possible because they want the paper copy
Gwendolyn Prellwitz
01:44:54
That is great advice April!
Brittany Fiedler
01:45:06
You cry! Because you find out UIUC gives you a FULL TUITION WAIVER!
Zoë McLaughlin
01:45:12
Echoing April, I had a problem with my transcript, so make sure to follow up with your school--mine didn't send it the first time!
Denisse Solis
01:45:30
Yea, always double check the program has received your materials!
April Hummons
01:45:31
Dominican will match the Spectrum funds but UIU gives full rides
April Hummons
01:45:53
Same happened to me Zoe
Twanna Hodge
01:46:00
UW will provide extra funds if you are a Spectrum Scholar.
Kelsa Bartley
01:46:02
Yes!! FSU did a tuition waiver for the first year!
Lorisia MacLeod
01:46:02
I'll echo what April re: transcripts that especially if you are in Canada! Or send it by courier because it is terrible when it get's lost in the mail!
Twanna Hodge
01:46:10
UW will provide extra funds if you are a Spectrum Scholar.
Brittany Fiedler
01:46:18
Shoutout to Deana Greenfield who was the person who called me and told me the news
Zoë McLaughlin
01:46:19
University of Michigan is another school that matches funding
Patricia Valdovinos
01:46:27
More advice is to send a friendly reminder to your recommenders a week or so before the deadline to remind them, especially if you see they have not submitted it.
Gwendolyn Prellwitz
01:46:27
Also the Facebook Group is *open* to all regardless if you have applied or gotten the scholarship
Rebecca Arriola
01:46:40
I applied to ACRL this year!
Rebecca Arriola
01:46:46
cross your fingers for me
Holly Smith
01:46:56
Fingers crossed!
April Hummons

Mentoring and coaching from many people.
Lorisia MacLeod
01:54:30
It can sometimes feel weird to add it to your email signature but it's worth it! I like to think of it as helping to notify people about something I care about and a community I'm part of :)
April Hummons
01:54:33
And recruit other scholars for future cohorts
Rebecca Arriola
01:54:39
Especially when you are applying to jobs after school, I always slipped "Spectrum Scholar" in the first paragraph of my cover letters. Jobs LOVE it
