Also worth keeping an eye on Google. They are rolling out Google Meet to everyone for free until September (currently limited to corporate G Suite users). Will require a Google Account to access and use though

Is there a resource that evaluates the accessibility of the platforms discussed and other online tools?

Remember that "free" is not secure/private
Kathryn Alexander
01:03:03
one of the issues with people not able to run zoom, etc. is that uploading your own webcam video puts a strain on internet connections

We'll definitely include PDF versions of the slides and the chat transcript with the archived recording of the webinar.

01:03:39
How is Webex ease of inviting attendees? Our city is now using it for City Council and elsewhere but what about access for patron sessions?
Abbie Anderson
01:03:46
Webex takes more initial set-up, is not as multiple-platform-friendly, and has more of a learning curve for its tools. But yes, much more robust once you're in!
Molli Hall
01:03:48
I know that my son's classes that do Zoom meetups and they have it where they just put up initials and not names.
Frank Skornia
01:03:52
Kathryn is right: I shifted my technology instruction to livestreaming over YouTube last month-so response from students was just text chat. I benefited from the fact that my home computer was already configured for livestreaming
Kathryn Alexander
01:04:20
asynchronous methods can be good too. prerecorded videos, text/image based guides, etc.

What platform is NYPL using for virtual tech training?
Stephanie Struglia
01:04:36
As a participant in WebEx, you can just choose to launch in a browser.. Nothing to download and easy to use.
Somnath Konduru
01:04:43
Kath -Livestream doesn't include video/audio?

01:04:43
We use Eventbrite for registration.
Somnath Konduru
01:05:20
Stephanie - Are patrons finding WebEx easy to use?
Abbie Anderson
01:05:23
@Stephanie, not so much in practice--they don't make it easy, in my experience.
Frank Skornia
01:05:29
Livestreaming audio & video tends to be one-way (from streamer to audience), communication back is typically text-based chat
Kathryn Alexander
01:05:29
Livestreaming meaning, you (the presenter) streams video and audio, but attendees do not have the option to join with their own webcam and voice chat
PLA Webinars
01:05:46
Remember, everyone, to send your chat messages to "All panelists and attendees" instead of the default "All panelists." Your fellow attendees won't be able to see your message if you don't send it to "All panelists and attendees." Thanks!
Sarah Scott
01:05:53
Webex is easy on the end-user side. There is some work involved on the back end in setting up the meeting and learning the various features, but it doesn't seem significantly more complex from Zoom in my experience.
Somnath Konduru
01:06:18
Kath - ok, I see

@Abbie, I'm using an old laptop (10 years old) and an older Surface running Windows 8 and the WebEx plugin in my Chrome browser works great. I also use the WebEx app on my iPad Mini and it works well. I did this yesterday for another webinar.

@Katie R. set the language to English and then it will auto caption. Then you'll need to go in and clean up the captions afterwards because the auto captions aren't great but give you a good base to work with.

I was tinkering around with GoToWebinar this morning and when you 'broadcast' it puts all attendees in listen-only mode
Michele Huie
01:21:58
We purchase rights to show movies in the libraries. By limiting the event, we make sure participants are our patrons.
Elizabeth Puckett
01:22:13
you can mute the room in zoom as well

Sarah Scott
01:22:33
In general, are libraries developing and presenting their own online classes or using external instructors/presenters?
Frank Skornia
01:22:39
In Zoom, as a host you can decide to blanket mute people and then selectively unmute them as necessary
Molli Hall
01:22:45
Michele are you doing this through Discord?
Jody Lazar
01:22:48
What platform were you using to get these results?
BrettBrett SilverSilver
01:22:54
I have Jaws running now, and I'm trying to listen to the speakers, but every time someone types a chat Jaws starts reading those. Which of course is unavoidable, but the good thing with zoom is they can record it and send it out later.
Marcia Divack

@Molli Hall. We are only gaming but a colleague in another library suggested movies to me yesterday
Marcia Divack
01:24:05
@Michele, how is your attendance for the gaming?
Frank Skornia
01:24:07
@Angela I believe you can set options for that. Most cases you can mute everyone and then they can hold down space to temporarily unmute themselves
Molli Hall
01:24:13
@Michele Huie...I may need to investigate that for SRP since we are thinking that we might still have some social distancing restrictions
PLA Webinars
01:24:17

if you blanket mute then can unmute themselves unless you change it in the settings to ban them from unmuting themselves, ,unnaming themselves or even showing video

01:25:04
I like that you are covering that we should remember nothing should go back to normal
Jody Lazar
01:25:09

Elaine Tai
01:25:51

@Somnath This is using Zoom's webinar setup, which is a set bunch of panelists presenting to a large audience

Yes, Outlook 365
Somnath Konduru
01:29:51

01:32:06

Alexandra Schneider
01:34:15
My library consortium is moving towards Slack for a few things. And my library might look towards Discord for some book club things. Our D&D Ya club is already using Discord successfully.

Could the panelists discuss platform compatibility with slow wifi? Anecdotally, it seems Zoom has better video compression than Teams, for example. On Teams audio and video is often not synched with group meetings. Video or audio comes through at rapid rate while the other is frozen.

Our goal is to have some recorded content on Tech that people can view at their own time - it also reduces pressure on speaker and presenter. We can have several different “live discussions” — this is the most efficient use of time, cost effective, and also creates some content we can refer people to when programs end
