Really appreciate the listserv!

01:11:47
Feel free to use the QA feature to ask any questions for Cathy and Susan!

01:12:03
Can you share how can we subscribe to the list-serve?

01:12:43
Do you have any virtual volunteer opportunities?

01:12:49
We’ve made temporary library cards

01:13:33
We have temporary library cards and we have a process to convert those into permanent ones via Zoom meeting.

01:13:45
oh nice

01:14:17
I'm relatively new to outreach services. We've been physically open since June, but not able to do in-person outreach. We're semi-rural (large town, but largely no internet outside of town County and surrounding service area). How do you decide what outreach you can do when you can't find out what the community wants?

01:14:46
We started offering eCards (online resources only) and giving the card numbers over the phone.

01:14:57
We’ve invested into Tutor.com which is helpful for schools as well as parents

01:15:40
Tutor.com is also helpful for adults preparing resumes

01:16:06
Andrew you could put out a survey. We invested in Spring Share at the beginning of Covid and it helps us to put out surveys to our patrons (as well as other services)

01:17:31
Andrew, you could set up a table near a supermarket, sort of like Girlscouts. And have people complete a survey there or get a QR code.

01:17:53
And one way to really support internet-less communities is providing hotspots.

01:18:14
Thanks!!

01:18:48
Yes, Natalia, our library has just started to offer hotspots, and they have been helping patrons greatly!

01:20:12
Thank you Jillian and Natalie. We had a survey through Survey Monkey at the beginning of the year, but it was with non-covid life in mind. I'll look into SpringShare. A table outside of a supermarket sounds good, we've had good luck at the local Walmart in the past. We have nearly 30 hotspots that are available for borrowing, there's a backlog in our ILS a mile long!

01:20:41
techsoup

01:21:11
Andrew: so, maybe more hotspots are needed?

01:21:21
7591495

01:22:04
Our library has been making Early Literacy Kits for preschools, and delivering them monthly (one per kid), with about 30 books for the classrooms as well. The kits go along with a pre-recorded storytime as well!

01:22:07
Spring Share was a huge life changer for us. We use it for our online calendar and LibGuides

01:22:59
One of our libraries has signs out by the road when they are open. This reminds people that's an option. We still deliver books through mobile services and also offer books by mail

01:23:56
Put outside signs about hotspot availability.

01:24:31
I work with the local jail... any advice moving forward seeing that visitors are no longer allowed for the forseeable future

01:24:43
@Nicole Gaudreau - love that idea - how are the pre-recorded storytimes delivered in the kits?

01:25:31
Yeah I was wondering about that too. I also wonder how you deal with copyright laws with prerecorded material

01:25:55
Thank you ladies! Lots of great information. Have a great day.

01:26:42
Ours was funded through an LSTA grant

01:27:01
Jillian, most publishers have that information on their website. Some give permission to share their stories on video.

01:27:04
@Bailey - we do a few things with our county jail and state/federal jail - 1) have them physically pick up some of our old donated books 2) if you do ILL like things, have their librarian or community outreach give you a list of materials they need and either mail it or have them do pick up.

01:27:28
@Rachell The pre-recorded storytimes are sent in an e-mail to each of the teachers (if needed we could probably burn them to a DVD) and because they are for educational purposes and not widely distributed (i.e. publicly online) I believe they are protected under fair use for education. The materials we use for the activity kits we make ourselves, so no need to worry about CR for those.

01:27:42
thank you!

01:28:10
Most publishers don’t allow prerecorded. They allow Live programming @natalia Unless you’ve seen something differently.

01:28:13
@Bailey I know some of the jails in the area have tablets that are locked down, but maybe work with them for using Overdrive

01:29:03
Jillian, I have seen something different. I think it depends on the publisher.

01:29:17
A few publishers are allowing pre-recorded - Chronicle Books is one. I've also been reaching out directly to small publishers and have been very successful with that approach.

01:29:48
Rachel, yes, in our case we have to reach out to international publishers, and we worked out a process...

01:29:51
probably. Ok thanks. I think most of the publishers we’ve looked at had restrictions on accessibility and pre recorded.

01:30:05
CR definitely depends on publishers. Most publisher websites currently have a very clear statement about what they allow, so I double check for every book I plan to use.

01:30:19
@Hannah yes, we check on the sites as well

01:30:30
The big publishers tend to be more cautious. The smaller presses are more flexible.

01:30:51
Jillian, we also have some storytime specialists recording oral storytimes with no book. For example, something from folklore or traditional stories. They use shapes and felt cutouts, but not a book.

01:30:51
Thank you

01:30:53
@Tina Super helpful -- thanks!

01:30:59
Thank you Cathy and Susan!

01:31:06
Does anyone remember the name for the company similar to BiFolkal Kits? They were at the ABOS Conference in Nebraska. I am remembering something along the lines of Meternity?

01:31:15
Oh that’s smart. We’ve done finger plays and felt board songs with our books.

@Jillian I love that! so cute!

01:31:55
@Kelly, yes, Meternally I believe

01:32:51
Kelly, https://meternally.com/

01:32:58
Does anyone else feel having an outreach discussion would be beneficial? To their point, I feel so alone with my programming it would be nice to bounce ideas off other people.

01:33:00
Thank You!!

01:33:04
Thanks so much for sharing your enthusiasm and information. My mother drove a bookmobile sixty years ago - many memories!

01:34:12
We are coordinating a storywalk with the local businesses and local chamber of commerce to create an outdoor holiday program that will involve the whole downtown.

01:34:53
If you belong to a consortium, check to see if you can borrow kits!

01:35:02
I'd like to talk to others about outreach to children and families...esp. in regards to Kindergarten readiness

01:35:23
@Kristina - yes, I'd like to as well

01:35:35
So much of our Kindergarten outreach was canceled last spring and I feel the same is going to happen this spring in our state.

01:36:06
Will the Chat and Q&A be saved?

01:36:13
Thank you very much
