Have we reached out to the Macmillan authors directly? Authors are often very conscious of the good work libraries do in terms of growing readers. I would think they'd be outraged.

Obviously this is more of a federal issue, but can you give some specific examples of what legislation you might like to see passed at the state level that would help further the #eBooksForAll efforts?

01:11:19
Hi! I'm from Charleston County Public Library in Charleston, SC. We are boycotting Macmillan (e-books, print and audio books) for 12 weeks. We have a whole page about the boycott on our website at www.ccpl.org/boycott and it includes an infographic we created (that we would be happy to share without our logo) about the five things patrons need to know about the boycott, links to the petitition and FAQ's.

Is there any company creating e-books based on blockchain technology? That would allow libraries to OWN copies of e-books. (Though I'm sure the big players want to postpone that as long as possible.)

What is the specific legal/legislative angle being taken at the federal (or state) level?
Brook Freeman
01:22:11
I posted anonymously on his blog chat saying I didn't feel I could promote/suggest/provide Tor books during the embargo period (this was the Tor only embargo, not the broader Macmillan one). Saying I was sad that it meant I didn't engage with his books during those initial four months. I liked to the ALA page about that at the time. Got banhammered and in his replacement text was basically 'This was all wrong. If you come back here with this, you will get permabanned."

Just as a historical note about this language out of the publishers, it echoes, almost exactly, the rhetoric that comes around everyone once in awhile about the Evils of Used Bookstores and how they are Stealing From Authors!!!!

It's more money in the book buying market, it's building readers for the future (same as libraries). If a reader sells a book to a used bookstore, they now have more money to go spend on books.
Rebecca Lamb
01:29:29
Has anyone's library stopped ordering print MacMillian as well as ebooks?

Larra Clark
01:38:55

If the distribution were managed by blockchain, a license is still possible. It depends on the terms included in the asset transfer or sale.

It would be ideal to use blockchain to own and lend individual copies of books, no license involved. But a company would have to offer that.
