Are the slides going to be shared?
Jenny Levine (Core staff, she/hers)
17:27
We'll get the slides posted in the ALA Connect group afterward
Ingrid Hsieh-Yee

What are some of the major losses from the MARC-BF conversion?
Crystal Clements
19:22
Our mappings and application profiles are on this page: https://www.lib.washington.edu/cams/swr
Crystal Clements
19:41
@Ingrid Theo will go into detail about the major losses from MARC-BF/RDA-BF conversions
Crystal Clements
36:05
For anyone who's interested, we are using RML to generate BIBFRAME from RDA-RDF https://github.com/RMLio/rmlmapper-java

A background reminder that our Code of Conduct can be found at http://www.ala.org/core/about/statement-of-conduct . Please contact me through private chat or at jlevine@ala.org if you experience any violations of the Code.

If you want to make use of some RDA relationships in your BF description, it is possible to add them...
Crystal Clements
48:20
Yes it's possible to add unconstrained RDA Registry properties to an institutional version of a Sinopia resource template.

Thanks, Crystal!

To Theo's question: UW is NOT the only library interested in pursuing "true" RDA linked data. Some of us don't have the resources to pursue it as intensely, though :(
Patricia Sayre-McCoy
56:37
I'm afraid that there are many developments only 1 or 2 people are using. How can we even become aware of them all, much learn them?
Abigail Sparling
57:02
Are there any MARC to RDA/RDF convertors or RDA/RDF to MARC convertors?
Laura Akerman
57:05
Have you addressed conversion of MARC21 following (as best it can) RDA standards, to RDA/RDF? If you have, are the losses you mentioned happening there as well? that is, would there be fewer losses converting “RDA” MARC21 to RDA/RDF than there would be by converting to BIBFRAME?
Crystal Clements
57:11
Perhaps all of us who are interested could begin collaborating to bring these developments and our resources together
Jenny Levine (Core staff, she/hers)
57:42
Core can provide space for a directory/database/resource
Casey Mullin
57:48
Crystal, I'm on board!
Michelle Futornick
58:14
is there a path to BIBFRAME aligning with RDA?
Michelle Futornick
58:31
any plans to do discovery experiments, to see whether the user tasks are best served by BIBFRAME vs RDA?
Michelle Futornick
59:09
with the large number of properties in RDA, do you have ideas for how Sinopia could allow catalogers to choose properties as they catalog, rather than having a list of them laid out in advance?
Adam Schiff
59:57
Michelle, yes that would be desirable development for the Sinopia development team. We have told them this would be very helpful
Crystal Clements
01:00:00
Those are great ideas Michelle! I haven't heard of any paths to BIBFRAME aligning with RDA or such discovery experiments. We have shared ideas for allowing catalogers to choose properties as they catalog in Sinopia with developers, but (understandably) that hasn't been worked on yet because we're the only institution using RDA
Patricia Sayre-McCoy
01:00:17
Theo--see the last slide you listed with all the RDA developments. That's what I am asking about.
Crystal Clements
01:00:59
@Laura I don't know of a MARC-2RDA-RDF converter, but I can say confidently that the losses we are talking about in BIBFRAME would not occur if it were replaced with the RDA Registry.
Abigail Sparling
01:02:48
These kinds of convertors would be essential to creating a linked data ecosystem through transition
Laura Akerman
01:02:53
Thanks Crystal. I’d like to reiterate, MARC to RDA conversion, the lack of an openly available converter MARC to RDA/RDF that would allow people to see the results is critical. The IGELU-ELUNA LOD WG tried to work on this but there was nothing. We’d be able to see RDA/RDF converted records in Alma now if there was one out there. Who wants to do it?
Crystal Clements
01:02:54
I don't think anyone would build that converter unless more institutions expressed an interest in using RDA-RDF
Laura Akerman
01:03:36
Chicken - egg
Stephen Hearn
01:07:59
Is there interest outside North America in RDA-RDF?
Michelle Futornick
01:08:27
maybe it’s time to move beyond forms!
Ingrid Hsieh-Yee
01:09:14
Have you tested using RDA 3R in Sinopia? Is that the path we should take instead of using 3R in BF?
Jenny Levine (Core staff, she/hers)
01:09:19

01:09:27
The National Library of Germany and the National Library of the Netherlands are both experimenting with creating data in RDA-RDF
Patricia Sayre-McCoy
01:09:48
IS anyone discussing what to do with all the pre-RDA records in OCLC and our own library systems?
Ingrid Hsieh-Yee
01:10:29
Did LC respond to the problem of data loss from the BF conversion?
Crystal Clements
01:10:50
@Ingrid: We have tested using RDA 2017 in Sinopia, but we have the ability to add mapped 3R properties to Sinopia resource templates. We don't have an application profile for 3R yet so as far as I know, no libraries have implemented it yet
Adam Schiff
01:11:34
There are multiple PCC Policy Committee here and maybe this discussion will trigger a discussion there
Jesse Lambertson

Is the chat going to be saved from this?
Jenny Levine (Core staff, she/hers)
01:14:02
Yes, the chat will be part of the recording
Beth Picknally Camden
01:14:05
I don't think that LC has converted RDA-RDF to BF
Adam Schiff
01:14:29
No, I agree Beth. I think LC is not doing anything with RDA-RDF
Laura Akerman
01:14:32
Thanks. Great session!
