These conversations early on are critical but also need to refresh when players come and go… also as a tip it may be in your favor to establish a non evil pc setup to start ..it’s a choice and it may constrain play for experienced role players but it’s a great help to guide new players along from the start as a force for good vs evil…it saves a lot of inter party backstabbing (literally) or surprises actions from PCs that May startle other PCs

Erica Villani

Sunday’s are best
Andrew Erickson
47:49
The Myst comment reminded me that a good way of encouraging people to share their preference, especially with new players, is to get what kind of media they like to consume. Fantasy books? Teen Dramas? Super Hero Movies? Really gives an idea of where people might like to self-insert.
Erica Villani
47:54
Two hours?? If it’s Thursday it would have to be late at night
Erica Villani
48:02
Yeah I just work Thursday nights
Danielle Costello
48:33
Thanks Erica!
Erica Villani
48:35
oh that would be so cool
Sierra Gordon
48:40
ooh! Andrew brings up a good point! Comparing from outside media what each type of game is like would be helpful!
Jessica Gilson
48:45
Forge is really impressive. FYI, there’s a fair amount of a learning curve.
Caleb Farley
49:16
Dynamic Dungeons is another good one. There's a Patreon, too, where he releases animated maps to use.
Erica Villani
49:19

50:45
looooove D&D Beyond for helping players keep track of all your stats!
Caleb Farley
51:03
If you work for a public library in the US, D&D Beyond has a program where they'll give you access to everything they have--for free! Saved us well over $600.
Jessica Gilson
51:16
That’s awesome!
Adam Harness
51:24
I use D&D Beyond constantly, and I love Beyond20.
Jessie Whitten
51:45
I have the master tier sub for my personal games, being able to share resources with my players is great
Erica Villani
51:45
THAT WORKS FOR ME, I THINK IT'S GOOD TO HAVE THAT LIGHT SIGNAL OPTION
Rebecca Strang
51:48
Wizards of the Coast Digital CLub Support page is where you can request free access to D&D Beyond: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/news/wizards-digital-club-support-program
Beth Felosi
51:57
I didn't know they had that. I used the Free version of D&D Beyond that is limited but that is awesome they do a free version for Libraries.
Caleb Farley
52:11

MAGIC OR BARD??
Adam Harness
54:37
For online games, D&D Beyond can integrate into Roll20 on Google Chrome using the Beyond20 extension.
Sierra Gordon
54:41
oooh chaos bard would be wild!
Erica Villani
54:57
RIGHT MAKE THEM WILD AHA
Sierra Gordon

BASIC rules for D&D can be downloaded for free here (not as in depth as the books you can buy, but enough to get started): https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules

WIld Magic is great, loved seeing it used in Critical Role towards the end of the last campaign.
Melody Flick
56:09
Halfling Cleric power!!
liz brown
56:16

Sierra Gordon
56:32
You just gotta check with wild magic to see if your co-players are okay with getting caught in the crossfire
Erica Villani
56:35
WHAT IS A SQUISHY CHARACTER
Sierra Gordon
56:47
Someone who may not be able to take a lot of damage
Jessie Whitten
56:49
Spell casters tend to have lower health
Alex Kuvalanka
56:58
squishy just refers to that the characters are going to be fairly fragile in combat
Sierra Gordon
57:08
Or personality-wise it is just types that aren't battle-hardened
Jessie Whitten
57:40
Granted a lot of spell caster players are pretty good with battle cause they just cast fireball haha
Adam Harness
57:56
My last wizard was a wizard/cleric multiclass and had an AC of 20 normally and could get up to an AC of 27 with shield
Erica Villani
57:57
I HAVE THE DND HANDBOOK AT HOME AND I HAVE A CHARACTER SHEET IT'S JUST..NOT WITH ME...BUT I MADE MANY FOR CHARACTERS I'VE NEVER PLAYED AHA
Priya Tait
58:03
One of my best friends played a wild magic sorcerer in a campaign a few years ago, and once she (accidentally) blinded HALF the party right at the beginning of a beholder fight due to her wild magic surging
Madeline Feuquay
58:52
starting as a level 1 wizard with 7hp is a big OOF though
Sierra Gordon
59:13
*Priya* ooooh yeah that can be fun but you gotta prepare a party for that! So long as everyone is ready and we all know that DM is gonna help roll with the chaos
Megan Simon
59:36
Is there a group where someone who doesn't have any experience can learn how to play?
Rebecca Strang
59:39
That's what all the resources are for!
George Bergstrom
59:43
started in 1985, is that enough?
Jodie Wilson
59:45
Has anyone played D&D with groups from primary grades?
Caleb Farley
59:56
Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series on YouTube is a big help, too--goes over the basics of classes, skills, mechanics, etc. XP to Level 3 has good videos, too.
Sierra Gordon
01:00:27
*Megan* YouTube videos are good for learning some mechanics and then finding a nice group to do a one-shot with to learn on the go tends to be the best
Joshua Carlson
01:00:29
I had a blast playing a VIctorian/Gothic Warlock, who based his entire persona on being an actual performing magician, with a Fey patron. Great times.
Erica Villani
01:00:30
I DON'T HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE IN MILESTONES BUT I THINK THAT IT'LL BE INTERESTING TO TRY MILESTONES
b story. ya acton
01:00:40
Also a good way to reward roleplaying
Danielle Costello
01:00:57
Thanks Erica!
liz brown
01:01:05
@Jodie- there's the Adventure Begins series WotC has published for 12 & under players
Megan Simon
01:01:05
Thanks Sierra! Any suggestions for finding a group?
Erica Villani
01:01:07
YEAH I LIKE THE SOUND OF MILESTONES,
Jodie Wilson
01:01:23
thanks liz
Caleb Farley
01:01:24
Milestone leveling is great, because the players are completely surprised when they level up. Very handy for a library program that can't meet with consistent players during a campaign.

Erica Villani
01:01:45
YES
Sierra Gordon
01:01:48
*Megan* I haunted various game and bookstores that have events but I believe there are Discord Groups and Posting on Roll20 specifically for finding a group
Megan Simon
01:02:12
Thanks!
liz brown
01:02:24
@Jodie there's also games /other/ than D&D specifically written for younger players but sometimes you need to sell them b/c D&D is the name brand
Rebecca Strang
01:02:42
haha
Erica Villani
01:02:43
I HAVE A NO CURSING RULE FOR MY PROGRAMS BECAUSE MY TEENS LIKE TO CURSE EVEN....WHEN THERE AREN'T GAMES BEING PLAYED
Jodie Wilson
01:02:47
@Liz I would be open to that
Elizabeth Land
01:02:53
Oooh. I love making up a word!
Megan Simon
01:03:05
