Description

Getting a challenge can be upsetting and isolating. Our panel of librarians, creators and advocates will discuss how they dealt with challenges to comics and graphic novels, and offer strategies for deciding how to handle them. They will discuss steps you can take as soon as you get a challenge and will provide tactics for responding to challenges, preparing defense, and gathering support.

Attendees will leave with actionable steps for responding to challenges and making sure they aren't alone in the fight.

She is the youth nonfiction selector, which includes graphic novels/comics. She moderates social media for the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival and has worked as a middle school and high school teacher, academic librarian and college instructor, teachers’ center facilitator, and curriculum developer. Ziba Pérez Ziba Pérez is a public librarian in the city of Los Angeles that was first introduced to zines at Long Beach Poly High in the late-nineties. Ziba makes ZebraRadar Zine which features her AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) screen name from the same time period. Before L.A. Zine Fest Ziba helped organize the Long Beach Zine Fest for four years. Ziba first attended L.A. Zine Fest in 2012 tabling as Three Amigos Press with two other zine makers. When Ziba is not in L.A. you can find her on the airwaves at Long Beach Public Radio. Kelly Jensen (Editor @Book Riot) Kelly Jensen is an Editor at Book Riot, the largest independent book website in North America. She covers all things young adult literature and has written about censorship for nearly ten years. She is the author of three critically-acclaimed and award-winning anthologies for young adults. She was named a person of the year in 2022 by Publishers Weekly and a Chicagoan of the year in 2022 by the Chicago Tribune for her anti-censorship work. Dawn Zimmerer (Adult & Youth Services Director @Madison County Library System) Dawn Zimmerer is the Adult & Youth Services Director for the Madison County Library System in Mississippi. She was formerly a Senior Librarian for Teen Services at The New York Public Library. She received her MLS from Southern Connecticut State University. She has been on the Amazing Audio, Great Graphic Novels for Children, and Rainbow Book List committees through ALA. She and her husband Mac (a now-retired librarian) founded the Social Justice Roundtable for the Mississippi Library Association. Outside of work she enjoys crafting and playing competitive trivia with her team the Dewey Decimators
